Dear Independence Day Parade participants,   As the summer draws to an end and our Independence Day Parade is becoming a distant wet memory, The City of Flagler Beach is gearing up for the next major event. Now is the time to mark your calendars and enter the Second Annual Flagler Fun Coast Bed Race! The race will take place on Saturday, October 2nd in the beautiful downtown area of Flagler Beach.   For those of you who missed the first race, it was a great event. The participants had a lot of fun and, most importantly, we raised over $3,000.00 which all went to provide assistance to needy children in Flagler County. The 2009 First Annual Flagler Fun Coast Bed Race was a huge success and 2010 is shaping up to be bigger and better. I would like to personally extend an invitation to all of out Independence Day Parade participants to be a part of this wonderful (and a little crazy) event. It will be a great opportunity to have a lot of fun, promote your organization, and raise money for an important cause.   Attached to this e-mail, is the registration packet which contains all the details about the event. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I hope to see you in October!   Thanks,   Tom Gillin City of Flagler Beach (386)931-7111

Saving Promise’s mission is to raise the visibility of domestic violence and bring it to the forefront of the public conscience in the same way as breast cancer awareness. Through research, awareness and action, we seek to:

  • propel domestic violence to the forefront of the American consciousness.
  • make the symbol of domestic violence instantly recognizable in the public forum.
  • partner with the domestic violence community to expand the reach of existing resources.
  • drastically decrease the incidence of violence that plagues our communities.

Saving Promise plans to partner with the community at large to create a national domestic violence brand and corral existing efforts to implement mass change and escalate domestic violence to a national priority.

CORE VALUES

Saving Promise believes that:
  • Helping the victim, the batterer and their children find their voices and live better lives is our top priority.
  • Breaking the silence and shame is the first step to overcoming domestic violence and its impact on our communities.
  • Educating the public about healthy relationships and self-empowerment highlights options for breaking the cycle of abuse.

Having the ability to live one’s own personal truth without being controlled by fear is the right of every human being.

Color Me Butterfly by L.Y. Marlow

Inspired by a true story, Color Me Butterfly follows four generations of mothers and daughters – haunted by a common specter of domestic abuse – as they discover the strength, hope, and courage to survive.

The last thing Eloise Bingham wanted was to leave the comforts of her South Carolina home and family. But at the end of World War II, the young wife follows her formidable husband, Isaac, to Philadelphia – only to experience Isaac’s sinister and violent temper. Eloise harbors fear and resentment, but carries an unwavering faith that helps her to mother her children. Eloise’s children – and their children and grandchildren – will face their own trials over the next sixty years: Mattie, who has lived in her mother Eloise’s shadow, finds it takes a life-changing tragedy to help her break free; Lydia, Mattie’s strong-willed daughter, summons the resolve to rise above the family’s cycle of abuse; and Treasure tries the patience of her mother, Lydia, as she has the chance to be the first in the family to escape the destructive patterns of abuse that have haunted her family for so long.

As the women discover in this poignant novel, it will take unconditional love, old-fashioned family values, faith, and fearless determination – already embedded in each woman’s DNA – to triumph over a life plagued with unspeakable pain.

. Exercise & Recovery
Many drug addicts have isolated themselves and have very few healthy relationships or positive social skills
as a result of continually using drugs and/or alcohol. Many think “What am I going to do if I’m not using?” A beneficial
way of channeling nervous energy while recovering from using is through exercise. Increasing one’s physical
fitness level helps reduce stress and improve physical health. Physical fitness also helps those recovering or in recovery
become interested in new activities, releases endorphins, the body’s natural pain reliever, helps relax, redirect
energy and improve concentration. Exercise can also be used as a valuable stepping stone to meet new people as
many in recovery have to leave their old lives behind, to develop a healthy supportive network.
